This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
